It's such an outdated strategy of small-market teams. The Rays and A's have graduated from that line of thinking years ago and are much better off for it.
Have they? The A's only spent money this year because the league forced them. They'll be back to spending as little as possible as long as John Fisher owns that team.
Oh, I was referring to the guys that can sell jerseys aspect - a-la A's Matt Holiday, Frank Thomas, etc. When they would add one big washed name to a crap team to sell jerseys. Seems like most smarter teams have abandoned that strategy and just truly bottomed out.
Their MO isn't to be "good," it's to be slightly below average with one or two guys that can sell jerseys.
